ICC to censor details of Pakistani player bans in the interest of British justice

ICC will withold the details from British viewers

The International Cricket Council will publish details of the bans imposed on the Pakistani trio found guilty of corruption, but not in Britain according to The Times.

The ICC have decided to prohibit the access of these details in the UK, which will be published on their official website this week, in order to respect the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision to charge Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir, as well as the player agent Mahzar Majeed, with criminal offences.

The trio of players were handed bans of 10, seven and five years respectively at an anti-corruption tribunal in Doha last week, and ICC chief executive Haroon Lorgat says the injunctions proclaim a clear message that corruption in cricket will not be tolerated.

After concerns were raised that the forthcoming World Cup could be susceptible to more spot-fixing, Lorgat is confident corruption will not emerge in the sport again.

“We have always said that we won’t tolerate corruption in the game and we want this to be crystal clear,” Lorgat told BBC Sportsweek.

“[The Bans] are a message that we must send out loud and clear; that we must not tolerate any sort of corruption. We will do everything in our power to ensure that the World Cup will be corruption free and I’m confident that the measures in place [will do so].

“The education process, the physical prevention, the investigation process and intelligence gathering, and finally a prosecution; those are the four corner stones on which we build our approach to ensuring cricket is corruption free and I am confident we are winning that battle.”

Lorgat went on to reveal that the ICC would be reviewing the measures it has in place for corruption prevention, such as the physical restraints on players and officials in and around match venues. Any details of the review are as yet unknown, but it is thought these will concern the prohibition of mobile phone use in dressing rooms and pavilions, as well as the reporting of any curious conversations or approaches by unknown personnel.
